nnovative Shipping Container Homes. Container Home No. 2: Dallas Designer Home

Boxclever is always on the lookout for innovative shipping container homes and one such masterpiece is situated in Dallas, Texas. Built from repurposed containers, this two-storey home is not only visually arresting but impressive in sheer size, too…

The vision

Inspired by the elevated position of the home’s site and the 360 degree views over White Rock Lake, Dallas, the architect envisioned his very own home built from shipping containers. His wish was to create a home incorporating clean, modern lines, natural light, wood, polished cement and glass. With the help and imagination of a lead designer – and two years of careful planning and construction – Matt Mooney’s dream home has become a reality.

The materials

Fourteen shipping containers form the main structure of this massive 343 7412 square metre home. The container roofs were left exposed to further accentuate the home’s unique character whilst the walls were removed and replaced with rock sheet – re-enforced with columns for strength which give the living areas and bedrooms a homely feel. Polished concrete and maple wood floors, steel, masonry and glass have been cleverly integrated and, as the main structure is comprised of shipping containers, spray foam was used between the building layers for insulation.

The design

Designed with entertainment in mind, the home’s first floor is characterised with large open-plan living areas and sleek, polished concrete floors to complement the containers’ natural steel structure. A most striking feature is the glass-panelled, two-storey tower with main entrance door. The tower overlooks and reflects the sparkling 3.8m rectangular pool and holds the main staircase to the upstairs living areas. The upstairs level – three bedrooms, den and open plan kitchen are fitted with warm maple floors which contrast perfectly with the containers’ exposed roofs. Besides offering stunning views, the four covered walk-out balconies shield the rooms from harsh sunlight whilst allowing for natural light.

The deck

To take full advantage of the amazing panoramic view, a rooftop deck was created. This deck is an entertainer’s dream – 130 plus square metres in size and big enough to hold up to 150 people! There’s a hint of genius here, as it not only offers the most incredible views, but also acts as a solar screen to insulate and protect the roof below, reducing energy costs.
